How Retailers Can “Manage the Moment” This Holiday Season
The holiday season is the most profitable time of year for retailers, and from the time those first decorations go up until midnight New Year’s Eve, store managers are eager to make every moment count. Doing this successfully is a delicate balancing act, requiring an ability to adjust staffing, inventory, product placement, pricing and promotional strategies on a dime if needed. Statistics about last season’s traffic counts and sales are useful for corporate decision-makers, but won’t help address an unexpected surge of shoppers or an out-of-stock issue as it’s happening.

Securing The Tunnel: The Retail Systems Dealer’s Remote Management Responsibilities
For many in the retail systems dealer community, internet-enabled remote access and support capabilities have been a godsend. Countless resellers, ISVs, and tech integrators have successfully expanded their geographic market reach while simultaneously lowering their support costs by enabling remote support, whereby many hardware and software issues can be diagnosed— and often fixed—without the need for an expensive truck roll and an on-site technician. Remote access to merchant POS systems is also an increasingly popular means of inexpensively executing software updates and conducting end-user training.

Many retailers consider investing in loss prevention technologies as akin to buying an insurance policy. It costs money to put it in place and maintain it, but there’s no ROI calculation until it’s needed. As such, the C-suite takes a conservative approach to LP spending. That’s why new LP technology adoption curves are often quite protracted. Consider IP video as a case in point—the technology is mature, and it’s been at the top of retailers’ LP investment list for several years now as merchants squeeze the life out of legacy analog and DVR investments on their slow migration to networked video technology.
We’ve been writing and speaking about mobile marketing a lot. The ubiquity of the smartphone, retailers’ healthy adoption of geolocation-supporting technologies, and the rampant development of retail branded smartphone applications designed to engage customers and thwart showrooming have pushed it to the top of the news cycle.
