Tips On Government Regulations Affecting Retail Commerce
When it comes to compliance with federal and state regulations, retailers have quite a bit on their plates. From Obamacare to state sales tax on e-commerce sales to hour-and-wage regulations, sifting through the data mired in confusing terminology and unclear directives can leave retailers with hefty fines, unhappy workforces, and dissatisfied customers. To understand what retailers need to know about some of today’s government regulations, I turned to Jim Thompson, CFO at Cavender’s Boot City and Integrated Solutions For Retailers editorial board member.

Item-level RFID Is The Cure For Out Of Stocks
Let’s start with the “disease”! Once deemed incurable and just treatable, out of stocks and overstocks for retailers have always been a big hairy problem. If you do not have the right mix of product or specifically the style, size and color as in the case of footwear and apparel you pretty much lose the sale, add unneeded cost and in many cases lose the customer too!
The Best Case for “Best Store Fulfillment”
To remain competitive, small to mid-sized retailers must master fulfillment across sales channels.
Omni-Channel Retailing – Experience The Difference Of RFID
You may or may not have heard of the buzz words – Omni-Channel Retailing, but heard of it or not, many consumers have experienced it. Omni-Channel retailing allows customers to have access to a retail store’s entire inventory; whether the consumer is looking through a catalog, in a store, or online, they have access to every piece of inventory a retailer has to offer. This ingenious way of doing business fits in well with the current “I want it and I want it now life-style” and allows for a very profitable return on investment.

It’s All In The Hand Shake
Selecting a Web platform can be a daunting part of the e-commerce process. It is one that requires a marriage of functionality, design, and budget. Since the design of the website is such a visible representation of the brand, much effort is usually put into selecting the Web platform and designing the site. However, in the process of building the site, often less time and thought is put into the actual order management and hand shake points between the various software systems that will drive the e-commerce engine.

Dollar General Gets In On The Acquisition Action
In a column two weeks ago, my colleague Erin Harris pondered what Dollar General was thinking about Dollar Tree’s $8.5 billion acquisition of Family Dollar. Well, now we know. Dollar General has thrown its hat in the ring with a play for Family Dollar that amounts to a $9.7 billion offer, plus the few hundred million in consolation that Dollar General would owe Dollar Tree if it’s a successful acquisition wrecker.
In case you haven’t heard, Manhattan Associates bought Global Bay, the mobile POS and clienteling solutions company that VeriFone just picked up about three years ago. You read that right—Manhattan, the supply chain titan, bought a company that’s decidedly in-store, in-your-face, customer-centric. At first, the buy surprised me, too. It doesn’t get any more store floor, customer-centric than what Global Bay does.
The looting that plagued retailers in Ferguson, MO on the heels of the Mike Brown shooting last week caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage and stolen merchandise. In countless cell phone videos posted to the Internet and capturing the unrest, liquor, sneakers, food, tires, and vehicle rims were among the items seen pilfered through smashed glass as helpless store clerks and associates hunkered for cover.
It’s high-profile news that mighty Walmart is suffering through slumping store traffic and stock performance. Last month, the giant even replaced President and CEO of U.S. stores Bill Simon in its effort to shrug off five consecutive quarters of disappointing results.
Dollar Tree’s acquisition of Family Dollar for $8.5 billion is especially interesting in light of discounters’ poor performance as of late. Back in April, Family Dollar reported it would cut jobs and close approximately 370 underperforming stores from its 8,100 store portfolio. Also at that time, Family Dollar decreased prices on nearly 1,000 basic items in an effort to better meet low-income shoppers’ needs.
