Companies selling products online must create a customized, secure shopping experience for consumers. However, before implementing the cosmetic site features that make the customer feel secure, companies must actually secure the customers data from the back end. A single data breach could tarnish a company's online safety record indefinitely.

There are several steps that a company can take to ensure that customer data is protected. First, from a technology prospective, critical customer information must be encrypted with proper key management during transmission to storage. Additionally, information security experts suggest that an e-commerce network should be secured through security-oriented system architecture, restrictive firewall configurations and overall system configuration.

Internally, companies must create awareness that data security is of utmost importance, holding their employees and partners to the highest security standards. Companies should also implement security policies, such as granting access to data on a "need-to-know" basis and making sure that configured access is kept updated. Many companies log access to critical information and evaluate log files regularly to ensure that only authorized personnel are accessing customer data.
