Case Study: DVM System Eclipses Video Surveillance Of Past
By Gennifer Biggs, Integrated Solutions for Retailers magazine
Imagine you are working late in one of Sunoco's APlus convenience stores when you notice a couple customers acting, well, let's call it ‘shady.' With the simple press of a button behind the counter, your store's surveillance link opens automatically on a screen in the central security hub of Philadelphia-based Sunoco. Moments later, you hear the voice of a security officer over an audio link embedded in the security system. Feel better? What if that same security officer, known internally as an intervention specialist, could chide the loitering patrons via the store's audio link only seconds later? Now you're talking security support.
The ongoing need to provide safe retail outlets for both employees and customers drove Sunoco to upgrade its store security systems starting in the early 1990s. The company first worked with a now-obsolete time-lapse video solution, but a digital video monitoring and audio solution was recently installed. With 650 company-operated convenience stores staffed by more than 10,000 employees, safety is a key issue for Sunoco, but it is also looking for a way to support the operational side of its retail stores.
