With so much attention on all-in-one POS (point of sale) systems, don't lose sight of the revenue you can earn with ECRs (electronic cash registers) for the right customers.

There's a lot of discussion these days around the latest POS technologies, such as PC-based all-in-onesolutions, and how they can revolutionize many VARs' businesses. While industry experts point to the growth of those technologies, some solutions providers continue to prosper by supporting the smaller merchants that can't justify the cost of these new systems (e.g. convenience stores, concession businesses). ECRs remain important to many VARs' businesses, and payment processing and PCI-DSS (Payment Card Industry-Data Security Standards) compliance is rejuvenating what some may consider a mature technology.

For retail businesses, payment processing systems have become almost as important as POS systems, with explosive growth in the number of card transactions over the last few years. In the past, customers were discouraged from using debit or credit cards for purchases less than $25, but lesser amounts are quickly becoming the norm. VARs can capitalize on this increase in transactions by integrating technologies that will streamline their customers' transaction processes. For example, countertop PIN keypads make it easier for restaurants to accept debit cards with faster and more flexible (e.g. cash back, verify amounts) transaction processes.
