Case Study: Inventory Management Solved At The Point Of Sale

We have grown accustomed to the technologies employed by most modern retailers. Other than small, one-of-a-kind stores, it is hard to imagine a store that still counts its inventory manually or uses registers that don't scan bar codes or print detailed receipts. Until June 2007, Chernin's Shoe Outlet was one of the few retailers still operating in that environment. The retailer wanted to expand the chain rapidly (from 20 stores to 50), and manual inventory processes and old register systems were standing in the way of progress.

The traditional method of inventory control at Chernin's was unreliable and very generic. On average, bulk counts were taken every two weeks to determine the inventory in each store. Bulk counts are simply physical tallies that the staff would take by hand. Bulk counts identified inventory by price point and category only, not by vendor, style, or size. Further, the retailer's inventory allocation system consisted of a combination of faxed Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and district managers traveling from store to store to determine specific inventory needs.

A comparison of five vendors resulted in the retailer's selection of Command Retail software from Celerant. The solution is a real-time POS retail management system that integrates all areas of a retail organization using scalable modules including POS, accounts payable, warehouse, and inventory management and allocation.
