As retailers face the realities of the current economic environment, the competition for the consumer dollar is fierce. That's why the fight to prevent loss is more important than ever before.
Shoplifting, armed robbery, and employee theft remain prevalent in the retail marketplace. But criminals are becoming more sophisticated. Emerging threats such as data theft and organized retail theft are adding to the security concerns of retailers across the country.
According to an April 2008 survey by the National Retail Federation, 85% of retailers said their companies had been victims of organized retail theft during the 12 months prior to the survey. A 2007 report released by Symantec Corp. cites "an increase in data theft, data leakage, and the creation of targeted, malicious code for the purpose of stealing confidential information that can be used for financial gain." These threats are having an impact on retailers, and they're prompting the need for more robust integrated security programs to protect critical retail operations.
