E-tailers are well-versed in the art of cross-selling, which involves suggesting items or accessories related to the products shoppers view or add to their carts. Many have turned to product recommendations solutions to present automated, personalized cross-sells for every product in their catalog, while boosting average order values and improving customer loyalty.
But this holiday season, automated cross-sells may not be the most fruitful strategy to get shoppers to spend more money in your online store. In a strong economy, consumers may not think twice about spending a few extra dollars on a well-rounded gift idea, but with the recession still looming in the back of many shoppers' minds, they might be more focused on a single gift and tend to ignore cross-sell suggestions.
Fortunately, today's automated recommendations engines are smart and flexible enough to deliver personalized product suggestions that can be more enticing to shoppers who are budget conscious this holiday season. With some subtle "tuning," recommendations can still help retailers boost order values, even in a tough economy.
