Retail technology solutions focus on the "big guns" -- the solutions accountable for the serious blocking and tackling across the retail enterprise -- from demand forecasting, marketing and merchandising solutions through store execution. These solutions are named also after their organizational counterparts, marking the lines between the retail silos. But as we've learned over the years, it's the white space between the solutions that has to get closed in order to "connect the dots", guiding communications and collaborations between people and processes.

Consider the myriad of things occurring inside the store and throughout the realm of execution that have nothing to do with the pure applications of point-of-sale, inventory, receiving and in-store merchandising. For example, in our experience, we've never encountered a retail chain with less than 70 forms! We've met retailers using in excess of 300 forms -- a dubious distinction indeed. This observance speaks to the complexity and the imperfection of manual processes, their relationship to people, and again, to the true killer app in retail, namely, compliance. Simply stated, getting millions of people across millions of stores to perform large numbers of processes with a high level of consistency and accuracy is the basis for a retailer's success or failure.
