TransAct Launches Ithaca® Wireless Point of Sale Printers

May 19, 2003

Wallingford, CT, (May 16, 2003) . . . TransAct Technologies Incorporated (Nasdaq: TACT), makers of Ithaca® brand printers, today launched new wireless technology for the point-of-sale (POS) market based on the popular 802.11b standard. The wireless solution is initially available as an option to the popular Ithaca POSjet® inkjet and the new iTherm™ 280 thermal receipt printers. By bringing leading-edge wireless technology to POS printing, TransAct cut the cost and difficulty of locating and installing POS printers when and where they are best utilized.

Ithaca wireless POS printers can go where the customers are, whether it's the sidewalk, parking lot, outdoor sales area or dining space. Because they can be moved as needed, additional checkouts can be temporarily added to decrease customer check-out time during periods or seasons of high traffic. For restaurants, these printers can go where the wait staff needs them, improving productivity and speed of service. Going wireless also reduces the clutter and disarray of cables in the kitchen.

The wireless technology is integrated into the printer's base so it is totally protected from accidental bumps and harsh environmental factors. Built into the same footprint as the printer itself, the TransAct solution also conserves space. The wireless interface option shares power with the printer, so there is no additional power cabling, reducing clutter and simplifying installation. The 802.11b protocol was selected to provide high-performance remote printing up to 300 feet, ten times further than other wireless printer solutions. It supports high-level encryption for system security and integrity. The wireless printers can be factory configured and are shipped as complete integrated units, no assembly required.

"Building on TransAct's technology leadership and record of innovation, with this launch, we're out front with wireless technology for POS applications," explains Mark Bauer, vice president, North American sales at TransAct. "Available now, our Ithaca POSjet inkjet printers and new iTherm 280 thermal printer are the new ‘go-anywhere' solution making businesses more flexible and more productive."

See the wireless iTherm 280 and POSjet for yourself at the National Restaurant Association Show (booth #5873), May 17-20 in Chicago and at the Retail Systems Show (booth #1519), June 10-12 in Chicago.
