Investing In Tech Startups: A Retailer’s Brilliant Risk
UK department store retailer John Lewis isn’t letting the ERP vendor community dictate its next technology move. Instead, the 40-location retailer (which also operated more than 300 Waitrose grocery stores) is taking to the grassroots, investing in a tech startup incubation competition it’s dubbed JLab.
A 2007 study of 3,000 consumers conducted by London-based consultancy Envision Retail found that 71 percent of the items consumers tried on in fitting rooms were subsequently purchased. That contrasts with Experian Footfall’s overall average brick-and-mortar conversion rate estimate of 30 percent.
Retailers, you have a target on your back. Don’t pardon the pun, it was fully intended.

He compares PCI as a means to ending retail payment data security concerns to the role of the TSA’s anti-terrorism efforts. His opinion piece makes two strong points.
