The future of retail may be hidden in its past. Nowhere is this truer than when looking at the wildly popular and yet grossly underutilized phenomenon of loyalty programs. Wildly popular I'm sure no one would argue with. There are loyalty programs operating at the corner store where you grab a quart of milk and at Nordstrom for some of the world's most luxurious merchandise. Yet what do I mean about underutilized?

Too often, we as retailers fail to completely exploit the potential inherent in our loyalty programs.We send universal messages to all of our loyal customers — without doing them the courtesy of crafting offers that would be personally relevant to them.
