Research & Trends: North American Retail Circa 2009: What A Strange Trip

In the past year and a half, we've seen some remarkable events in North American retail. Retail sales are down nearly 10% from last year and are currently at 2005 levels. Christmas 2009 sales are shaping up to be flat to down from last year (and last year was the worst in 40 years). Store closings ratcheted up to a point where it was difficult to keep track of them all. And some top retailers disappeared or were subsumed by others.
