As a retail operations executive with more than 20 years of experience running stores for Top 150 retailers, I've seen just about everything. Inefficient processes. Antiquated technology. Poor store-level execution. Labor schedules out of compliance with labor laws and union agreements. Frustrated employees and high turnover.

For years, I thought these problems were unique to my company. I thought we were the only ones who made it difficult for our store managers and associates to successfully do their jobs to increase sales and provide a good customer experience.

But now that I've worked for several large retailers and networked with operations executives from other retail chains, I realize the problems I saw were not the exception, but, more often, the rule across the industry. Furthermore, in discussions I've had with my store operations peers working at other companies, I now realize many C-level executives at large retail chains have no clue as to how difficult it is for stores to execute their retail strategy due to obsolete technology and backward processes.
