Consumers have enthusiastically embraced tablets as a new type of mobile device and are lining up at retailers to sample and purchase the latest offerings. Retailers who may not even sell them are beginning to use tablets as interactive mobile catalogs so sales associates can assist shoppers with their purchases. Specialty retailers are providing tablets so shoppers can custom design their own products.
With Apple projected to sell tens of millions more iPads this year on top of the 15 million sold in 2010 and ten or more competitors hitting the shelves, how will these tablets be secured at retail? Consumer electronics are most often found in high engagement areas of the store, but this isn't enough of a deterrent to attempted theft of highly sought after devices.
