No matter how automated a store may get, whether via customer self-service options or automated dispensing of anything from prescription drugs to cosmetics to high-end electronics, one thing will always require labor, and that is stocking the shelf.

Decreasing out-of-stocks is one of retailers' top priorities, according to research RSR conducted during the summer of 2009. In our Precision Inventory Management in the Age of Localization report, retailers' top business issue was unpredictable consumer demand, and their top two opportunities were to decrease inventory while simultaneously decreasing out-of-stocks.
