A Datalogic Mobile and Quest Solutions Whitepaper

The advent of electronic mobile equipment in the early 1990's led many retail companies, suppliers, and distributors to move to automation as a means of increasing efficiency, automating processes, and maintaining an accurate inventory. At that time the Telxon was a leading manufacturer of equipment. Standard applications of the technology allowed field sales, distributors, or retail operators to update inventory and process orders remotely using a standard phone connection. This was an easy and reliable method based upon existing telephony technology. Much of this equipment is still in use though the technology has evolved through various iterations. The reliability of existing legacy Telxon and similar equipment is no longer carefree. The devices may be operational but the underlying technology no longer supports analog data transmission. This document reviews the impact of changes in telephony technology on legacy handheld computer systems, reviewing the issues that reduce their efficiency and suggesting methods for migration.
