Costco, BJs Wholesale Club, and Sam’s Club are the leaders in the wholesale space. But, Boxed, a warehouse shopping startup for mobile is shaking things up for the warehouse giants. Since its launch, it’s been reported that Boxed is a Costco reseller, but Boxed’s CEO and co-founder, Chieh Huang has not commented heavily on the topic. No matter the status of the relationship, brick-and-mortar warehouse clubs aren’t going anywhere. But, Boxed does have a few tricks up its sleeve — no membership fees, free shipping on orders more than $75, and disruptive technologies to ease the distribution process.
Based in Edison, NJ, Boxed is a mobile commerce company focused on delivering the big box club experience to mobile devices. Huang and his partners have leveraged their tech entrepreneurial skills to launch and run the business, which has been dubbed the mobile answer to brick-and-mortar wholesale. Boxed was founded by former Zynga execs Huang, William Fong, Christopher Cheung, and Jared Yaman, who had joined the gaming company through the acquisition of their startup Astro Ape in 2011. The group developed the Boxed app, which allows shoppers on iOS and Android devices to browse hundreds of bulk goods and purchase them directly from the app with free shipping on orders of $75 or more.
