In 1984, when I got my first mobile phone installed in my car, I paid approximately $500 per month for 30 minutes of talk time. I was charged extra for roaming and extra for long-distance. And that was just for voice calling….outrageous, right? Today, data transmission via cellular networks is cheap by comparison. Gigabytes of video, voice, text, and audio data are whizzing through the air for a small fraction of 1984’s price. And that downward slide of data fees has enabled the development of a whole new cadre of always-on, always-connected, always-communicating devices.
