Networked safes at Texas Star allow cash to travel from the safe drawer to the bank door without seeing the light of day.

By most standards, 26 stores doesn’t constitute “big” in the retail industry. When you’re running a chain of 26 convenience stores that operate across the vast expanses of South Texas, however, you’re not just big. You might just be the only game in town. That’s the story for many of Texas Star’s 18 convenience stores and 7 Subway restaurants. The company also operates a retail financial services store.

The distribution of its stores is at once a boon and a threat for a c-store business with a site portfolio that spans the gamut from cities to small towns and desert intersections in the middle of nowhere. C-stores, a long-popular robbery target, are particularly vulnerable to cash loss when they’re planted in the far reaches. As a result, Texas Star takes the safety of its 300 associates — and its cash — very seriously.
