Digital Signage Renaissance

Retailers remember the days of the TV/VCR combo sitting on the shelf in the home improvement store, playing their favorite how-to video over and over again, lines running through the worn out VHS tape. The DVD player quickly followed with its handy "repeat" option, and we were well on our way into the land of digital signage.

As a displays engineer years ago, I worked on the impending surge of the digital signage revolution. Plasma was the flat panel technology of choice, and we were heading towards what industry analysts predicted as the hockey stick growth curve — except it kept moving to the right as obstacles, namely the capital cost of deployment, got in the way of the mass deployment and adoption of digital signage.
