This white paper from MaaS360 by Fiberlink discusses the effect of the Android operating system on IT staffs as Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is quickly growing. The main concerns for IT with Android and BYOD are protecting corporate data and providing standardized management. This paper notes, “there are not more than 550 Android device types, 48 manufacturers, and a multitude of carriers worldwide.”

Android is often customized by carriers and manufacturers, installed with custom variants of the OS and added software and applications to differentiate their offering from other manufacturers. The growth and innovation of Android is great for consumers, but is becoming a serious challenge for IT professionals as they seek methods to efficiently manage these devices in a standardized way.

The newest and most updated versions of Android have vastly improved on security and management capabilities, but with so many devices on the market and new versions of Android not supported by many devices it is unlikely any enterprise will deal with a single version or device type. Because of the raid growth of Android, IT must be ready to manage the multitude of devices they will see with BYOD and have the right protective measures implemented.
