The healthcare industry has HIPAA. The financial services industry has Sarbanes-Oxley. Wall Street has Dodd-Frank. Some say it’s high time merchants and solutions providers in the retail industry are subject to a higher form of regulation, too. One voice of such reason is Steve Norell, CEO at retail solutions VAR US Merchant Services. “From credit card and checking account data to Social Security numbers, retailers and retail solutions providers put huge volumes of highly sensitive personal consumer, associate, and business information at risk all day and every day,” he says. “We have a responsibility to protect that data from falling into the wrong hands and inflicting untold damage, but there’s far too much subjectivity in our industry around how to handle that responsibility.”
