Possibly the result of a depressed economy or rising living costs, criminal activity is on the rise, and those criminals are becoming more sophisticated. This is particularly evident in the retail industry where organized retail crime (ORC) gangs have found ways to outwit retailers’ return policies, thwart theft-deterrent strategies, and elude law enforcement.
Although estimated to cost the retail industry close to $30 billion annually, ORC can be fought, and retailers don’t have to remain victims, says Christopher McGourty, founder and CEO of the National Anti-Organized Retail Crime Association Inc.
