Outside Looking In: Securing Retail Parking Lots With Wireless Technologies

Source: MicroPower Technologies

This article by Jon Siann, Founder and CEO of MicroPower Technologies, discusses the dynamic and evolving nature of the retail security market and the effect the economy has on it. Siann writes, “No other vertical market is affected by the economy as much as retail is, as the ebb and flow of the market relies on consumer confidence. Unfortunately, as consumer sentiment waivers, criminal activity grows.”

There has been significant investment in the past in analog technologies to limit loss, crime, and shrink in the retail environment. These technologies, however, are quickly coming to the end-of-life and new solutions are needed. Retailers are moving to IP-based surveillance technologies which offer new functionality, better image quality, and integration with other network systems.

IP camera deployment is often done within the confines of the retail location (warehouse or store), but it is important to extend coverage outside the building. Extending the reach of surveillance to the parking lot is a viable option as it allows security departments to further reduce liabilities, control loss, and gather more evidence if an incident does occur.
