Playing Games With Safety?

Everyone knows associate risk awareness and prevention are serious business. The National Safety Council pegs the average cost of a single disabling on-the-job injury at $54,000, though any sizable employer knows that severe workplace injuries can cost millions.

With 1.4 million US employees, Walmart is no stranger to the corporate and personal costs associated with workplace accidents. Yet over the past year, several thousand employees at Walmart Logistics distribution centers have been making a game of it. The retailer has been using a three-minute daily gamification drill to train 75,000 distribution center workers on workplace safety procedures.

The project started in 2012, when Walmart Logistics began a 5,000 associate, eight DC pilot with Ontario-based Axonify, a multi-industry provider of interactive training software. Six months later, the program was implemented and expanded to reach 75,000 DC-level employees.
