In her report recapping the 2014 GRMA Executive Leadership Forum, Stephanie Fischer, president and CEO of GRMA, states “senior management’s role is to encourage and empower their organizations to adopt a passion for experimentation. Those who do so will distance themselves from the pack, and those who don’t will be left in the dust in a global world characterized by exponential growth in technology and intense localization.” From a technology perspective, how can retailers’ senior management teams distance their organizations from the pack? What kind of lift does that actually require?

Fick: To break away from the pack, management teams need to be comfortable with fast-paced risk-taking. Of course, corporate-level ramifications associated with widespread changes to a several-thousand location enterprise need to be considered. However, I’m beginning to see a handful of progressive retailers really embracing rapid-paced change.
