The Millennial Workforce: Impacts And Implications On The WFM Interface
At 80 million strong, Millennials officially comprise the largest cohort, or generation, in American history. According to the Boston Group, they ac- count for more than a trillion dollars in consumer spending. They’ll support 50% of the U.S. economy by 2016. But more important, Pew Research says they’ll comprise 75% of your workforce by 2030.
While the contrast between Millennials and their Gen X and baby boomer predecessors is stark, the distinguishing characteristics between this new labor pool and Generation Z that follows it are nuance; Millennials and Gen Z-ers alike are well documented by sociologists for their digital nativity/ connectivity, narcissism, and high professional and career expectations.
These characteristics, combined with their sheer volume, contribute to a great and sustained workforce management challenge for retailers. It’s a challenge that can only be addressed by change.
