WFM Provides Full Compliance, Reduced Expenses, And Increased Productivity At The YMCA
The YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles is committed to helping people lead balanced, healthy lives and to building community. Through 26 branch locations, it offers an assortment of youth, wellness and fitness programs for people of all ages to help them achieve and maintain a healthy spirit, mind and body.
The Challenge
In 2010, the YMCA examined all of its existing human resources (HR) management activities. Its payroll system was limited in its ability to provide key HR metrics and analyses. Time and attendance and scheduling were managed with time consuming and inefficient manual processes. Manual scheduling was done remotely by program directors at the various branches, using paper or a simple spreadsheet. There was no remote visibility to schedules, either within or between branches.
With 2,500 employees — most of them part-time — the organization also faced significant challenges in complying with California’s complicated labor laws and regulations. The previous YMCA payroll and time and attendance systems had no built-in regulatory compliance capabilities; they relied on branch managers to negotiate the labor laws and flag potential issues.
