Why Gamification Is Big News For Retailers

Gamification in retail is big news. It has been celebrated for boosting consumer engagement by 22% - and losing JC Penny $700m. So what is gamification and how does it apply to the retail industry?

We already know that gamification in retail (consumer-facing) takes the dynamics of game playing – firmly rooted in the world of the video games – and applies them to create engaged and loyal consumers who spend more. Air miles and loyalty schemes in coffee shops worldwide have proved this - it's hardly big retail news!

But putting the behaviors of gaming and game players into activities that might be described as mundane – work, for example – can make it both challenging and fun.
