Buying clothes online is always a calculated risk. Will it fit? Or won’t it?

Hudson’s Bay — Canada’s largest department store — is the latest retailer hoping to take the guesswork out of shopping for apparel online through a new partnership with True Fit. Both its Canadian stores, under the banner Hudson’s Bay, and its American stores, under the banner Lord & Taylor offer a True Fit analysis on their websites.

In less than a minute, customers can create True Fit profiles by inputting their favorite styles and answering questions about their body types. True Fit’s patented fit personalization technology instantly returns a personal fit rating and size to the customer. There is no measuring, and the service is free for consumers.

Customers also can choose to save True Fit’s data so their True Fit profile can be accessed on any retailer site that uses the program. True Fit currently partners with retailers including Nordstrom, Macy’s, Guess, Oscar de la Renta, and UK department store, House of Fraser, which credited True Fit with increasing online sales significantly.

True Fit manages a growing database of the world’s top apparel, footwear, and consumer fit data. To date, it has more than 1,000 brands in its database. True Fit makes it recommendations to consumers by using machine learning algorithms to sort through database. The company says that the more a customer uses the True Fit service, the more accurate it will be in future purchases because the database becomes larger.

Providing the ecommerce tool is just one recent announcement from Hudson’s Bay— founded in 1670 and North America’s longest continually operated company— In July 2013, the company announced its $2.4 billion purchase of Saks Fifth Avenue.  Hudson’s Bay purchase introduces Canada to the luxury retailer’s department stores, and also Saks’ outlets — Off Fifth.
